Learn about the exciting world of robotics during this introductory course where students will have a hands-on opportunity to design, build, and program a basic robot to interact with its environment. While working in engineering teams of two, each team will have an opportunity to learn the basics of building and programming (NXT-G software) using the highly acclaimed Lego Mindstorms NXT platform.

NXT Robotics Summer Camp - 2012

2012 Summer Camp Theme: SMART City Challenge

Modeled after the successful after school NXT courses, the GearBots Program at Yale Secondary School is teaming with the Mitchell Odyssey Foundation, BCIT's School of Energy and the Abbotsford Recreation Centre to offer a one week camp this summer on July 9 to 13 and August 20 to 24, 2012.

Prerequisite: Given the constraints of the program, please be advised that it is required and expected that students will be able to work cooperatively with others, follow directions, work on-task, function within the lab / team setting, and be respectful of both the equipment and others. This program is NOT advisable for students with behavioral or social needs.

The goals of the courses are to promote an awareness of basic computer programming (engineering/ designing) while reinforcing key concepts such as applied physics, math, effective problem solving, critical thinking, and teamwork skills.

Space is limited, so reserve your spot on June 1st, 2011. Maximum 20 students per course.

Using the SMART CIty theme and the NXT Mindstorms robotics platform, students will be introduced to the basic engineering and programming options needed to complete a number of engineering challenges. Students will learn how to program a robotic device with the following concepts: servo motors, measured distance, degree turns, thresholds, switches, if-then statements, and light sensor. Students will participate in a friendly challenge that involves completing four challenges within a set time limit.
