Dereck Dirom currently teaches a Makerspace program at Abbotsford Sr. Secondary School. He has seen first hand how promoting science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) through the use of robotics and coding can be used to engage and motivate a diverse community of learners. In 2008 he was awarded a Mitchell Odyssey Foundation Grant, which has assisted in the expansion of his robotics program. Dereck has teamed up with a number of local agencies to offer a robotics engineering program called GearBots Makerspace to provide a number of opportunities to students ages 9-15+ with the Upper Fraser Valley. GearBots currently offers after school courses (non-credit), summer camps, and an annual one day robotics challenge at the BC Skills Canada competition. Our programs are specifically designed for students interested in learning more about engineering robots, coding and the field of mechatronics.
