Dereck Dirom is an educator who brings the world of innovation to life within Abbotsford Sr. Secondary School through his dynamic Makerspace program. With a keen focus on fostering curiosity and excellence in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM), Dereck harnesses the power of robotics and coding to captivate a diverse community of eager learners. Notably, his impactful work earned him the distinguished Mitchell Odyssey Foundation Grant in 2008, a pivotal catalyst that propelled the expansion of his robotics initiative.
In collaboration with local agencies, Dereck spearheads the GearBots STEM Program, a visionary robotics engineering venture encompassing both a Junior Makerspace program and a Senior STEM Academy. Catering to students aged 9 to 15+, this program radiates its influence throughout the Upper Fraser Valley, offering a spectrum of enriching experiences. GearBots extends its reach through after-school courses, invigorating spring break and summer camps, and a booth at the Abbotsford International Airshow STEM Zone.
At the heart of our meticulously crafted programs lies a profound dedication to nurturing students' fascination with engineering robots, mastering coding skills, and delving into the captivating realm of mechatronics. GearBots is a conduit for young minds brimming with curiosity, channelling their enthusiasm into the boundless world of technological exploration.
